The number worth staring at this week: 29.45% of commercial queries in Google's AI Mode now return a text ad, according to SE Ranking's study of 50,032 commercial keywords across 20 niches, collected June 30, 2026. Search Engine Land's coverage framed it the same way: ads have reached nearly 30% of AI Mode queries.

AI Mode is Google's conversational search surface — you ask a question, an AI-generated answer replaces the familiar ten blue links, and cited sources sit alongside the synthesized response. For most of its existence it was ad-free. That grace period is over. On roughly one in three commercial queries, sponsored placements now appear inside or beside the AI answer, and per SE Ranking, when ads show up, 71.1% of the time there are two competing ads side by side.

The distribution is exactly what you'd expect from an auction finding its footing. SE Ranking found ad presence climbs from 24.33% on keywords under $2 CPC to 53.56% on keywords at $10+. Where the money is, the ads already are.

Why this is structural, not incremental

Three years of "AI will kill search ads" takes just got their answer: the ads didn't die, they moved into the answer.

The mechanics matter. Search behavior is migrating from keyword-and-scan to question-and-answer. Google was never going to let that traffic walk away from the auction — the auction is the business. So the ad unit follows the user into the AI interface, and the old boundary between "organic result" and "paid result" gets replaced by a stranger one: cited source versus sponsored placement, both living inside the same generated answer.

Here's the detail from the SE Ranking data that should reframe how you think about it: only 11.53% of advertiser domains also appeared among the sources AI Mode cited for the same keyword — and at the exact-URL level, just 1.95%. Roughly 85% of advertisers had no organic presence for the terms they were paying for. Ads and citations are almost entirely separate populations. You can buy your way into the answer, or you can be quoted into it, and right now nearly nobody is doing both.

That's the convergence story in one stat. SEO and paid media used to be different teams optimizing different real estate. Inside AI Mode they're two entry points to the same single answer box — and the brands that show up in both slots compound.

What ecommerce advertisers should do now

1. Creative becomes the differentiator when placement is algorithmic

In classic search, you fought over position with bids and Quality Score levers you could at least see. In AI Mode, whether your ad appears — and against which generated answer — is decided by systems you don't control and can't meaningfully "optimize placement" against. What you do control is whether the ad wins the click once it's rendered next to a competitor, because per the same data, most of the time there is a competitor sitting right there.

That collapses the game back to creative and offer. Volume of tested angles becomes the edge: more hooks, more product framings, more variants shipped per week. This is the same lesson performance teams learned on TikTok — our creative testing guide covers the testing cadence, and the economics of producing that volume have already flipped; tools like Prizmad turn a product URL into finished video variants in minutes, which is what makes high-cadence testing affordable in the first place.

2. Feed and data hygiene stop being a back-office chore

AI systems assemble answers from structured data. Your product feed — titles, attributes, GTINs, pricing, availability, review data, schema markup on product pages — is now the raw material an LLM uses to decide whether your product belongs in a generated answer at all. A feed that was "good enough" for Shopping placements is not good enough for a system that reads, interprets, and paraphrases your data. Audit it like it's ad copy, because functionally it now is.

3. Being citable is the free half of the equation

The 11.53% overlap number cuts both ways: it's a gap, which means it's an opportunity. AI Mode cites sources on every answer, and AI assistants across the board already crawl and cite well-structured content — clear data, direct answers, tables, named numbers. Publishing content built to be quoted is how you earn the organic slot next to the ad you're paying for. Concrete example of the format that gets picked up: structured cost breakdowns like our AI video ads cost guide — specific numbers, plainly stated, easy for a model to lift and attribute.

What to watch by Q4

Three predictions, framed as analysis rather than certainty:

  1. Ad density keeps climbing on high-CPC terms. The 53.56% figure on $10+ keywords (SE Ranking) reads like a preview, not a ceiling. Expect holiday-season commercial queries to be closer to majority-monetized in AI Mode.
  2. The citation-vs-ad overlap grows — for whoever moves first. Today's 11.53% overlap is a market inefficiency. The brands wiring content strategy and paid strategy into one motion will show up twice in the same answer while competitors show up once or not at all.
  3. Reporting fragments before it consolidates. Attribution for AI-surface clicks is still murky, and Q4 budget reviews will feel it. Set up your measurement conventions now, before the traffic mix shifts under you in November.

The takeaway isn't that search ads survived AI. It's that the answer box became the new results page — and it has room for exactly two ads and a handful of citations. Decide which slots you're competing for before your competitors decide for you.
